The family of Ahmad Zaher Hmeidat, 28, of Ramallah, received his body on Oct. 20 but has not been given the autopsy findings, according to a position statement issued on Oct. 21 by Palestinian prisoner institutions.

Hmeidat was arrested on Sept. 30, the statement says. Wattan News Agency, reporting his death on Oct. 18, said he was from Jalazone camp north of Ramallah and that news of him had been cut off since Israeli forces opened fire on him and assaulted him that day.

The family learned of his death from another detainee at Abu Kabir, where the institutions say Hmeidat had been held since his arrest. In the family's account, that detainee told them Hmeidat had been in poor health for days, that the prison administration refused to transfer him for treatment, and that a guard then assaulted him before his death was announced. The family says he had no notable health problems before his arrest.

As of Oct. 21, no cause of death had been made public, and Qayd found no public comment from Israeli authorities. The institutions say Israeli authorities are withholding official information and not answering Palestinian agencies, including the General Authority of Civil Affairs. They are calling for a serious, independent investigation.
