Amnesty urges release of Ayman Bani Owda, jailed without charge since 2025
Ayman Bani Owda, a social worker from Tammoun in the occupied West Bank, has been held without charge or trial since Nov. 17, 2025. Amnesty International says he is detained for his human rights work.
Israeli forces detained Ayman Bani Owda on Nov. 17, 2025, in the al-Fasayil area of the Jordan Valley, according to Front Line Defenders. Nearly a year later, he has not been charged or tried.
He is held in administrative detention, an Israeli military procedure that allows jailing without charge on renewable orders. The first order, issued on Dec. 1, 2025, cited “endangering the safety of the region,” Front Line Defenders reported. On Sept. 15, 2026, the military commander issued a third order adding four months. On Sept. 24, a military court upheld it but cut the term to three months, Amnesty International said in an appeal published on Oct. 21.
Amnesty calls Bani Owda, a father of four also known as Ayman Ghrayeb, a human rights defender held “for his human rights work.” Front Line Defenders, which spells the name Ghraieb, said he documents violations by Israeli authorities and settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank.
In December 2025, Front Line Defenders reported that he was held at Megiddo prison and denied visits from his family and his lawyer. Amnesty’s appeal says only that he is in an Israeli jail outside the occupied territory.
