Mazen al-Rantisi has been released from Ganot prison with marks on his body from beatings he suffered during his detention, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society said on Sunday, Oct. 25. Representatives of the group in the Hebron governorate received the 71-year-old physician after his release.

Israeli Border Police arrested him at dawn on Sunday, June 21, at his home in Ramallah, Sama News Agency reported at the time. Local sources told the agency that his family was not given the reasons for the arrest. He was taken for interrogation to the Yamar police station in the Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim.

A family physician who mainly treats patients on limited incomes, Rantisi is known locally as the “doctor of the poor.” Sama described him as chair of the board of the Union of Health Work Committees, a Palestinian organization founded in 1985 that provides care to thousands of patients a year, particularly in villages and remote areas far from city centers. The agency reported that he was arrested over his volunteer work as the group’s chair.

Neither report cites a formal charge against him or a response from Israeli authorities.
