Eight prisoners sent to solitary over a cake made from rations
A cake that eight prisoners at Lavi prison had made from saved bread and jam was found in their cell, Israel Hayom reports. All eight were moved to solitary confinement and face a disciplinary hearing.
For several days, prisoners at Lavi prison set aside bread and jam from their rations to make a cake. It was found in their cell, and the eight prisoners were moved to solitary confinement on the orders of the Israel Prison Service’s Southern District commander, who also sent them to a disciplinary hearing, the Israeli daily Israel Hayom reported on Oct. 25. The paper calls them security prisoners; Middle East Eye describes them as Palestinian.
An inquiry into the incident found, Israel Hayom says, that the eight had made the cake to celebrate what the paper described as a change of government and the replacement of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who oversees the prison service.
Ben-Gvir also posted about the episode on X. “A spoonful of jam and another spoonful of jam,” he wrote, as quoted by Middle East Eye. He praised the prison commissioner and the guards for finding the cake, the Israeli news site JDN reported.
“They had already planned the celebrations, but for us, the celebration is over,” he wrote. The post closed with an appeal to voters ahead of Tuesday’s election.
No report names the prisoners or says how long they will be kept in solitary.
