Journalist Bushra al-Tawil, held without charge, kept isolated in Beersheba

Bushra al-Tawil, a 33-year-old journalist from al-Bireh, has been held since February under orders that carry no charge and no trial. The order was renewed again, and she remains in isolation at Ohalei Oz, the Palestinian Prisoners' Society says.

Israeli forces arrested Bushra al-Tawil, a freelance journalist, at the Ein Sinya military checkpoint near Ramallah on Feb. 5, 2026, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. On Feb. 12 she received a four-month administrative detention order: imprisonment without charge or trial.

The order has been extended twice since. On June 11 her lawyer, from the Palestinian Prisoners' Society, told CPJ that the Ofer Military Court had added four months. On Oct. 12 the society said it had been renewed for four more.

Palestinian prisoner institutions said on Oct. 7 that she had been moved from Neve Tirza to isolation at Ohalei Oz (Ohalei Keidar) in Beersheba, after 46 days of continuous isolation that began at Damon prison. A lawyer for the Commission of Detainees' and Ex-Detainees' Affairs who had repeatedly asked to visit her was told she had been moved again.

On Oct. 12 the society said, citing a visit, that prison authorities were isolating her and subjecting her to beatings and abuse. On Oct. 18 it said she remained there.

Her father, Jamal al-Tawil, has spent years in Israeli prisons as an administrative detainee, the institutions say. WAFA reported that she was freed in the January 2025 prisoner exchange.
