The International Committee of the Red Cross says Israel recently gave it a list of people held in Israeli detention. A Palestinian group that tracks the missing says the list holds more than 8,000 names.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says it is updating detainees’ families after Israeli authorities gave it “a list of names of people held in Israeli detention facilities,” the Times of Israel reported on Oct. 25. The paper said it covers Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza and is the first since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

The report gave no number. The Palestinian Center for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared puts it at more than 8,000, including 828 from Gaza. The center said Red Cross calls showed that the families of 127 of those Gaza prisoners had not known they were alive.

The center says the list “reflects an incomplete and deficient record.” By its count, more than 7,000 people remain missing in Gaza; an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 are suspected of having been forcibly disappeared.

Israel stopped sharing the lists and halted ICRC prison visits after the attack, the Associated Press reported. On June 3, 2026, Israel’s High Court ordered the state to resume cooperation with the ICRC, according to Israeli rights group HaMoked. Visits have not resumed. “We hope that we will resume in the near future,” ICRC spokesperson Gilad Grossman told the AP.
