Three journalists from one Dheisheh family in Israeli custody
Islam, Osaid and Moath Amarneh are journalists from a family in the Dheisheh refugee camp, south of Bethlehem. Two of them are held without charge under administrative detention. Islam is due in an Israeli court on Nov. 8.
On May 3, Israeli soldiers arrested Islam Amarneh, a 31-year-old freelance journalist, at her father's home in the Dheisheh refugee camp, south of Bethlehem, Reporters Without Borders says. On June 1 she was moved to Damon prison. The Israeli army told the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) she was "apprehended for questioning on suspicion of involvement in illegal security activities." She is due in court on Nov. 8, the Prisoners' Media Office, a Palestinian outlet, reported on Oct. 31.
Her brother Osaid, 40, was arrested on Aug. 27, 2025, and is held in Ofer prison under administrative detention, which lets Israel hold people without charge on renewable orders. His has been renewed three times. He went in weighing 110 kilograms and is now about 80, the office said, citing the family.
Their cousin Moath, a photojournalist, was freed on April 9, 2026, after eight months, CPJ says. Israeli forces arrested him again at home on Sept. 10. He is held in Ofer on a four-month administrative detention order, according to the office.
The father of Islam's young daughter, Osama Hammad, 32, of Jerusalem, has been held since July 23, 2023. Counting him, four relatives are in Israeli prisons, the office said.
